Stages of Labor
Pre Labor/Prodromal Labor:
Known as Braxton Hicks or “practice contractions”. Your body is preparing for labor by thinning the cervix. Can last hours, days or weeks.
Early Labor:
One of the longest phases of labor. The cervix usually dilates less than 6 centimeters. Contractions are mild, lasting about 30 seconds and are 5-7 minutes apart. Most women are able to walk/talk throughout this phase.
Active Labor:
The cervix has opened to about 6 centimeters. Contractions are more intense, 60 seconds long and about 3-5 minutes apart (5-1-1 : 5 mins apart, lasting 1 minute, for 1 hour). Try: counter pressure, massage, birth ball, resting, swaying, squatting, heat, singing, meditating, birth affirmations.
Transition Phase:
This is the shortest stage but the most challenging. Contractions are usually 2-3 minutes apart, 90 seconds long and cervix is 8-10 centimeters dilated. Try: water therapy, changing positions, hydrating, affirmations, distractions, and breathing.
Pushing/Birthing of Baby:
Cervix is completely open at 10 cm and you are about ready to breath your baby down and out.
Delivery of the Placenta:
Final stage of labor. 30-60 minutes after birth of baby.
